A Simple Lesson in Grow Lights

Trying to equip a grow room with the right type of lighting can seem very frustrating. There are so many things to consider, such as the type of light bulbs you need, the best kind of reflectors for minimizing heat, what wattage bulbs you need and of course, how far away from your plants light fixtures should be. If you take things one step at a time, you can learn about plant grow lights without getting frustrated.

The first step is to learn about different spectrums and intensities of lighting. Specifically, you need to learn about the best type of lighting for different stages of growth. That way you’ll know whether you should be using HPS or metal halide lamps. Then it is a simple matter to find a grow light calculator or chart to help you determine what size bulb to buy, and how far it should be kept from your plants.

Now you should explore different types of reflectors and ballasts. Learn what types of light fixtures work best, and why. Some offer the advantage of being more energy efficient. Some may control heat in your grow area better than others. This is an important thing to consider, as you will need to control temperature as well as lighting within your grow room.
