Free virus removal programs giving us the virus?

Late last night i was flipping threw the channels after watching poker after dark and i saw a promo for “Stop Sign” virus removal program and supposedly they offer a free virus scan and I guess they just upgraded there services into a program or at least an online program for people to use for multiple other related issues.

But if anyone else has seen these guys or used there service. Along time ago, probably 2-3 years ago. They were promoting the same thing on a commercial. Advertised free virus scan. So one day i decide i would go try it out. Well Obviously they wanted me to install all this weird crap, But i decided i would go ahead and let them put some stuff in. Then the scan began. By the way i had Norton Anti-virus and one other virus protection software already on my computer and they scan regularly with no problems (viruses are very hard to get if you know your way around the net and know what your getting your self into, they make it seem like you can just be infected anytime by anyone. Its possible but 99% of the time the user got the virus themselves by not caring what they download).

So I’m sitting there waiting for the scan to be complete. 30 seconds later, a huge list pops up with a number of these “viruses” and of course they take you to another page and ask you if you wanna buy there software. I went back and looked at the “viruses” they found. Now thing is, The places they found these viruses in din’t even exist. they kinda threw up some bogus directory names. So i just exit out and go on my way.

Literally 2 seconds after i close my browser. My spyware software pops up and says its found a spyware blah blah blah, but it was called “Stop Sign”. So i tell my spyware program to remove it and it goes away. 5 seconds later my Norton tells me its found a virus and gives me information and i see “stop sign”.

Are these people so hell bent on selling off there product that they give you viruses just to make sure you buy it to get them off? Well long story short. I got the viruses and spyware off but what kind of marketing is that? Sure it may seem genius but that has to be crossing the line some how. I really hope this doesn’t come the next great marketing scheme. I mean i don’t wanna have to walk into a Walgreens in the future and get sliced on the arm by the cashier and then have him offer me to buy some band-aids.

Anyway moral of the story is. Keep to big name protection (Even though i think Norton is horrible!). Or at least search for some feed back on the software your using. As i learned, these little bastards will try anything to get you to buy there software.

Oh well, take care everyone. Done ranting today.
