Hiring in a Construction Business

Hiring is a challenge in any business, but in the construction business there are special considerations. While it’s possible for candidates to look good on paper, a construction business must try them out first. Construction tends to have turnover not unlike retail so where does a construction manager find prospective workers?

Colleges and Universities - Find out who is in charge of job placement at your local college or university and contact that department. Some students would love to try out construction work while they attend school or in addition to attending school.

Run ads outside the area - Run advertisements outside the region and run them in places where the economy is depressed. If there has been a construction work slowdown in a region, there may be a large pool of skilled workers to choose from; even some who will be willing to relocate.

Look outside the country - Good workers can be found outside the country. As our economic structure becomes increasingly global in nature, it has become easy to sponsor workers from other countries. Some countries (such as Cuba and Iran) are taboo, but most countries are acceptable to hire workder from.

In other to maintain a competitive advantage in a construction business, a steady source of potential workers should be available to interview and select from.
