IBM Point of Sale Systems
We often think of IBM as “Big Blue”, a company that manufacturers giant super-processing computers. But IBM also has a line of Point of Sale Systems for retail application. A Point of Sale (POS) System is needed in almost any physical retail environment and in some cases online retail environments.
The primary thing to keep in mind when selecting from the IBM POS choices (aside from costs), is the footprint. Footprint refers to the space the system takes on the countertop or desktop. Generally there are two types of ‘footprints’: integrated and distributed.
A distributed footprint system will have most of its components separated (monitor, printer, display, keyboard and others). The advantage to this is that the components can be arranged in a variety of ways to suit a counter space. Another advantage is that each separate component is easily replaced if needed.
An integrated footprint system will have all its components built into one unit. This is advantageous if the counter space is very limited or there is a possibility of theft.
IBM offers a variety of integrated and distributed POS systems. The biggest problem a retail business will have is making a choice among all the different systems available!
