Prepare to Persevere for a Flight Attendant Career
Few people have any idea how challenging it can be to start a flight attendant career. First you apply for positions in a highly competitive field. Then you go on an extremely stressful interview where poise, personal appearance and personality count more than just about anything. If you are one of the few lucky ones to be selected as a candidate for employment, you then must begin rigorous training at an airline’s designated flight attendant schoolprogram. You aren’t officially hired until you complete training, and there are tests throughout your course that function as elimination tools. Training is unpaid in almost every case.
Once you’ve made it through several weeks of training, you then work on reserve status for an average minimum of one year.
During reserve status, you basically fill in for sick, vacationing or re-routed crew members as needed. You have to be available for work on very short notice. If you don’t reside near your assigned airline base, you will have to commute there as needed.
Once you are off reserve status, you can then bid on assignments, but these are awarded based on seniority. Only the senior-most flight attendants truly get to fly where they would most like to go. It can take years and years to advance far enough to be able to get even some of your choice of assignments.
